Pragati, the Women's Development Cell of Daulat Ram College, is a students’ collective with a passion for gender equality and feminism. It is a safe space where we aim to learn and unlearn by initiating conversations on everything from the pressing social issues to everyday incidents from the perspective of women. We firmly believe in empowering women in terms of self-esteem, personality and character, and providing a platform for students to explore and develop themselves as aware, independent individuals. Pragati aims to generate awareness and educate students on women’s rights, status, health and empowerment through conferences, seminars, workshops, lectures, debates, essay writing and poster making contests, field trips, film making, film screenings, street plays, graffiti, pledge walks etc. WDC celebrates Women’s Day annually on 8 th March with zeal and enthusiasm and conducts various competitions and seminars. In 2020-21, a speaker session was held with eminent speakers like Vatsalaa Jha (IRS, Income tax dept.), Japleen Pasricha and Neeti Suri Mishra. Recently, we organized an international webinar on ‘Women and Career in Science: Opportunities, Challenges and the Way Ahead’ from 6th Jan - 8th Jan 2020. The Speakers for the event included Dr. Anu Bashamboo, Senior group leader at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, France; Dr. Santwana Kar, a Life Science Strategy Director at a California based start-up in Basel, Switzerland and Dr. Vaishali Chaudhuri, a Data Scientist at Verana Health, USA. The webinar was very well received by the audience, and it received a viewership of around 3000 from students and faculty members of various colleges. Over the years, we have had the honour to invite many renowned resource persons: Dr. Kiran Bedi, India’s first woman IPS officer; Mrs. Niyati Mittal Kashyap (Asst. Commissioner Delhi Police), Mrs. Bina Aggarwal (Prof., University of Manchester), Dr. Nikita Sobti (Senior Gynecologist, Max hospital), Dr. Vijayalakshmi K. Gupta (Ex Defense secretary, Govt. of India), Sadhvi Pragya Bharti ji (Director, Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan), Judge Neetu Suri Mishra, Japleen Pasricha, Founder Feminism in India. On 10 August, 2018, WDC organized a National Conference where eminent speakers were invited, who addressed the employment opportunities and challenges in media for women. We have organised many self-defense sessions. We screened ‘Asabhya Betiyan’ with Nakul Singh Sawhney and signed an MoU with Palna orphanage for a year, January 2018-19 for literacy and etiquette training. We have been involved in Street Plays, Menstrual Hygiene campaign, conducted an Awareness session on PCOD & PCOS decoded, and a workshop with Goonj, an NGO that works for rural development. We publish our multidisciplinary bilingual magazine ‘Shreshtha’ (with ISBN number) in which the faculty and students of all departments of the college contribute research articles and works of art, related to women’s issues. The magazine is in the limelight of the DU circuit. We have organized many informative seminars and various competitions like article writing, paper presentation, creative writing, debate competition, photography, doodle making. We have organized various live sessions on Instagram during the pandemic on topics like Sexual health awareness, Mental Health Awareness, Unconventional career options for women, Financial Literacy session, “Be Your Own Laxmi” in collaboration with BeArtsy. We also had an Awareness session on menstrual hygiene in collaboration with Unicharm and webinar on cancer awareness and healthy lifestyle in collaboration with Sanjeevani - Life Beyond Cancer.We have also introduced our own blog this session to enrich and give a platform to students for talking about issues related to feminism and women empowerment. We are active on Instagram and use the platform to talk about various issues concerning women and society in general, which is updated regularly. We are also well recognized by DUbeat, a reputed newspaper in the DU circuit. Thus, Pragati echoes our commitment to empower women of the 21 st century and to sensitize the youth about the same.
