About the Department

The discipline of Political Science engages the students to understand a broad and diverse area of inquiry covering Political Ideas, Political Theory, Comparative Political Systems, Indian Politics, Global Politics, and the Administrative State. It enables the students to revisit some of the universal concepts, theories and practices by locating them in the larger social, economic, political, and cultural processes. While developing a clear comprehension of the fundamentals of Political Science, they also get a good grounding in both theoretical and empirical knowledge that is essential to the discipline. They are trained to develop an analytical framework to understand the multiple perspectives of understanding political realities. It equips them to not only move towards an adequate understanding of the issues, challenges, dilemmas, and conflicts that are critical to contemporary polity, economy and society but also to argue, interrogate and contest the dominant understanding.

The department comprises 15 dedicated faculty members to guide and support students at every stage. The faculty has vast experience in the field of teaching and research. They have several research papers published in reputed journals. The Political Science Association, ‘Republica’, apart from organising activities like fresher’s welcome and farewell for the students, also conducts several Seminars, National Conferences, In-house Skill Development Programmes, and Faculty Development Programmes. Further, the department organises Talks and National Conclaves, where prominent political scientists, defence strategists and experts in international politics are invited to discuss contemporary political, international and strategic issues. This helps in broadening the scope of understanding of the students regarding the discipline. In addition to these academic activities, it also organises co-curricular activities, including an annual department festival, ‘Metamorphosis’. Each year the department also organises ‘Constitution Day’ and ‘Vigilance Awareness Week’ to generate awareness among students regarding the constitutional values and duties.

Thus, the department, through regular classes and association activities aims to equip the students with tools to harness future career opportunities in fields of Academics (both Teaching and Research), Civil Services, Journalism, Law, NGOs and other agencies that work in areas like Gender Studies, Human Rights, Rural and Urban Development, Public Policy and International Relations. Students can bag various prestigious fellowships like the Young India Fellowship and LAMP Fellowship (Legislative Assistant to Member of Parliament). Students with a Political Science background are one of the most proactive and innovative students of the college. Our graduates and postgraduates become influential performers in a range of professional settings.
